CAC PIN Management
Your CAC PIN protects access to sensitive systems. Understanding PIN rules and recovery options prevents lockouts and keeps your credentials secure.
PIN Requirements
CAC PINs must be 6-8 digits. Avoid sequential numbers and repeated digits. Don’t use birthdates or other easily guessed combinations. Change your PIN regularly for security.
Lockout Prevention
Three consecutive wrong PIN entries lock your CAC. The lock requires a visit to an ID card office to reset. Double-check before each entry to avoid lockouts.
Changing Your PIN
Use ActivClient or the Windows certificate manager to change your PIN. You’ll need your current PIN to set a new one. Some organizations require PIN changes at regular intervals.
Recovery Options
Locked CACs cannot be unlocked remotely. Visit any ID card office with your locked CAC. Bring a second form of ID. The process typically takes 15-30 minutes.
Security Best Practices
Never share your PIN with anyone. Don’t write it down where others can find it. Report lost or stolen CACs immediately. A compromised PIN requires card replacement.
