New CAC Reader Not Working?
You bought a new CAC reader and it won’t recognize your card. Before you return it, try these troubleshooting steps that fix most reader issues.
Driver Installation
Most modern readers work with built-in Windows drivers. However, some require manufacturer-specific software. Check the reader documentation and download drivers from the official site if needed.
Middleware Check
DoD systems require middleware like ActivClient or the DoD certificates. Run InstallRoot to update your certificate chain. Outdated middleware causes most “card not recognized” errors.
Card Orientation
CAC cards must insert with the chip facing the correct direction. Most readers accept cards chip-up or chip-facing-reader. Try reversing orientation if the reader doesn’t detect your card.
USB Port Issues
Front USB ports sometimes lack sufficient power. Try a rear port connected directly to the motherboard. USB hubs can also cause recognition problems—connect directly when troubleshooting.
Card Damage
Inspect your CAC chip for scratches or corrosion. Clean contacts gently with a soft cloth. If the chip is visibly damaged, visit your ID card office for a replacement.
